I have bought a Maxtor onetouch 4 plus firewire 400 (500GB) external hard drive to be used as shared drive for Oracle ARC testing. I am following the document http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Oracle/DBA_tips/Oracle10gRAC/CLUSTER_10.shtml I could not get one of the drives listed in the document so I have bought maxtor one touch 4 plus firewire drive. When I tried following the instructions in the above RAC document I could not see the external hard drive. It showed probing the new drive at the time boot and I have selected configure. I have tried the troubleshooting notes shown in the above document also but that did not help. Regards kv1394 == disk enclosure not suitable == The SBP-2 bridge chip in this disk enclosure is not able to support concurrent access from more than one initiator (host). You need a disk enclosure with OxSemi chip. I just updated "[[FAQ#Is it possible to use a 1394 disk drive from two hosts simultaneously?]]" to list this requirement explicitly. I did ask the manufacturer soon after I bought it and remember him saying maxtor onetouch 4 plus chipset as oxford some number. i will ask them one more time. However appreciate if you can update this post with any firewire external drive you know of with chipset required for concurrent logins. The oracle document I have been referring has specified maxtor onetouch II and III drives which I am trying but not able to get. kv1394 :I believe SATA to FireWire bridges are currently from OxSemi only. So if you get a FireWire drive with SATA mechanism in it or even with FireWire + eSATA interface (and maybe USB in addition), then it is highly likely that an OxSemi chip is in it. :One of the vendors who use OxSemi chips is [http://macpower.com.tw/ MacPower]. Their IDE to FireWire 400 + USB 2.0 drives are Prolific based nowadays though.
